Graduate Teaching Exam (SLTS) Sri Lanka: Results, Interviews and Entry Rules

The graduate teaching exam is the open competitive examination that recruits graduates into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service (SLTS). Successful candidates are appointed to Grade I (A) of Class 3 and posted to national and provincial schools in the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. This guide explains how the 2026 round is structured, who could apply, how the interview stage works and the only safe places to check your result.

Status, checked 15 October 2026: the Ministry of Education released the lists of candidates qualified for the first phase of interviews on 14 October 2026, as reported by Newswire.lk. The North Western Provincial Public Service CommissionтАЩs own page confirms that its list is out. The written examination was held on 24 May 2026. BrightNook does not republish the lists, so use the official links below. Last updated: 15 October 2026.

Check your list on the official site (last checked 15 October 2026):

Reported, not yet confirmed by us from an official notice: interviews are to begin in November, call letters will be sent by post, interview schedules will be posted on the Ministry and provincial websites by the end of October, and candidates who need university documents had to apply for them before 20 October. Check your provincial office for the exact dates.

Key facts

  • Full name: “Competitive Examination for the recruitment of Graduates to the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service for Sinhala, Tamil and English medium Teacher Vacancies in National and Provincial Schools of the Island – 2026”.
  • Published in: Gazette Extraordinary No. 2474/19 of 2 February 2026, amended by No. 2476/18 of 18 February 2026.
  • Appointment: Grade I (A) in Class 3 of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service.
  • Scale of recruitment: the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat recorded on 8 September 2026 that Cabinet had approved recruiting 23,344 graduates to fill teacher vacancies across the three mediums.

Who could apply

The amending gazette moved the date by which qualifications had to be complete from 30 June 2025 to 5 March 2026. Note 3 of that gazette states there is “no impediment for those who have completed the degree qualifications to apply”.

On age, clause 5.1.5 III states that the “age required for the recruitment to the post should have been fulfilled by 10.02.2023”, while all other qualifications had to be fulfilled by 5 March 2026. Read both dates together: the age test and the qualification test are measured on different days, which catches people out.

Subjects, mediums and provinces

Vacancies are not a single national list. Schedule 5 of the gazette is a matrix of subject codes, running from 101 to 302 and from 401 to 440, showing which subjects are available in national schools, in provincial schools and in each individual province, separately for the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. You apply against a specific subject and medium in a specific place, so the code you choose decides where you can be appointed.

Eastern Province has its own rule. Clause 2.10.3 provides that applicants who are not permanent residents of the province may apply only for certain subjects there, such as Science, Mathematics and English, and that appointments are offered to non-residents only after recruitment from permanent residents. The relevant Provincial Public Service Commission sets those terms.

The stages

  1. Written examination. Conducted island-wide by the Department of Examinations.
  2. Results and the qualifying list. Candidates who reach the required standard are called forward for interview.
  3. Interview. Interviews are arranged provincially. In the Northern Province, for example, the Governor, the Provincial Public Service Commission, the Provincial Ministry of Education and the Provincial Director of Education met on 8 September 2026 to plan them, and earlier rounds published panel-wise Stage 1 and Stage 2 name lists on the provincial council website.
  4. Appointment. Made to Grade I (A) of Class 3 of the service.

Where to check your result safely

Use only official sources. For this examination those are the Department of Examinations, the Ministry of Education, and your own Provincial Council or Provincial Department of Education website, because interview name lists are published province by province. If a site is slow on release day, wait and try again rather than trusting a copy.

How to check your result

  1. Start with your own provincial page below, or the Ministry of Education website. The Department of Examinations, doenets.lk, held the written examination and can help if you cannot find your list.
  2. The interview-qualified lists were released through the Ministry of Education and the provincial websites. Search with your examination number or national identity card number, as the site asks.
  3. Keep your index number and application copy ready, because you will need them to look up your own result.
  4. If you cannot find it, contact the Department: hotline 1911, email exams@doenets.lk, or telephone +94 11 2786200.

Interview lists by province

Interview lists are published by each province, not in one national list. For the Northern Province, the Provincial Council has published its notice on arrangements for the interviews to recruit graduates into the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service. For the North Western Province, the Provincial Public Service CommissionтАЩs Teaching Exam 2026 page states that the list of applicants qualified for the interviews has been released. For other provinces, check your own Provincial Council or Provincial Department of Education website. We add official links here as we confirm them.

Do not rely on reposted result lists, and do not repost them yourself. The Department of Examinations states that examination results are the property of the Government of Sri Lanka, and that copying, keeping, posting on a website or social media, or otherwise publicising results that are not your own is “strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence”. Many sites that republish name lists are breaking that rule, and their copies are often out of date.

Tips from BrightNook

  • Keep your index number and your application copy together. The interview stage asks you to prove what you claimed at application.
  • Check that your degree is recognised before you worry about anything else — see our guide on checking whether a degree is recognised in Sri Lanka.
  • Watch your own province’s council website, not only the Ministry. Interview lists appear there first.
  • Treat release dates circulating on social media as rumour until a .gov.lk page carries them. Several sites published different “release dates” for this round.
  • Never share your NIC or index number in a comment or a group chat.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a provincial teacher recruitment?

It is one national examination that fills both national-school and provincial-school vacancies, but the interview and appointment steps are run by the relevant provincial authority, which is why lists appear on provincial sites.

Which subjects can I apply for?

Only those listed against your medium and your chosen province or the national-school column in Schedule 5 of the gazette. Read the schedule before choosing a code.

Where is the official notice?

The amending gazette is Extraordinary No. 2476/18 of 18 February 2026, which amends No. 2474/19 of 2 February 2026. All provisions not amended remain as published in the original notice.
