Practise observation and explanation
Before answering, identify what each question asks you to observe, describe, compare or make. If an image is provided, note specific visual details instead of giving only a general impression. In a written response, connect your point to an element you can actually see, such as form, colour, composition or technique. For any drawing task, follow the paper’s directions and manage your time across the parts.
After finishing, revisit questions where your explanation is vague or your evidence is weak. Keep a short list of unfamiliar terms and works to review from your class notes or textbook. Ask your teacher to check work where judgement is needed; a question paper alone cannot tell you how your response would be graded.
About these PDFs
These are question papers only; this page does not provide a marking scheme. For the available Science paper, see the O/L past papers library. You can also browse the Department of Examinations past papers page for its official catalogue.
A simple practice routine for O/L Art
- Session 1: read the whole paper and underline the command words (describe, compare, explain, create) in each question.
- Session 2: answer the written questions using specific visual evidence — colour, line, shape, texture, composition and technique.
- Session 3: do a timed practical sketch based on one of the paper’s themes, focusing on planning your layout before adding detail.
- Session 4: review your answers with your teacher or against your textbook and note terms you need to learn.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Writing general opinions (“it is beautiful”) without pointing to details in the artwork.
- Ignoring the time plan and leaving the practical section rushed.
- Not naming artists, traditions or periods correctly where the question asks for them — keep a short glossary from your notes.
