The Graduateship in Chemistry (GIC) is a four-year professional qualification run by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) through its College of Chemical Sciences. It is one of the main routes into a chemistry career for A/L science students who do not enter a state university. Applications are now open for the November 2026 intake.

GIC Entry Requirements
Main route: three A/L passes in science subjects, including Chemistry, through any of:
- G.C.E. A/L (Sri Lanka)
- G.C.E. A/L or International A/L (Pearson Edexcel, UK)
- G.C.E. A/L (Cambridge International, UK)
Alternative routes:
- Completion of IChemC’s Diploma in Laboratory Technology
- Completion of a foundation course in science subjects offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka
- Other criteria approved by the Institute’s Council
Already have a general degree? Graduates with a general degree (SLQF Level 5) from a state university that included enough chemistry may be considered for direct entry to Level 3, subject to Academic Board approval.
What You Study
- Years 1–2: fundamental and intermediate Organic, Physical, Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry and Biochemistry, with supporting Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Electronics and Statistics.
- Years 3–4: advanced chemistry, with industry-based optional subjects and research-oriented courses.
- Laboratory work runs through the first three years.
- Final year: a research project or an internship, depending on your GPA.
Recognition
- Government of Sri Lanka (1986): accepted the GIC as an alternative to a science degree with Chemistry as a subject, for employment purposes.
- UGC (1996): stated that the GIC satisfies the basic requirement for registering for a postgraduate Diploma or Degree in Chemistry.
- Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (2012): accredited the GIC as a four-year BSc.
- Passing the GIC also meets the requirement for Associate Membership of IChemC.
IChemC also lists transfer pathways with Northumbria University (UK), the University of Cincinnati (USA) and Truman State University (USA), each under its own arrangement.
How to Apply, Step by Step
- Check that you meet one of the entry routes above.
- Download the 2026 GIC handbook and the BOC payment slip.
- Prepare your results and supporting documents.
- Apply online through the IChemC MIS.
- Follow the registration instructions. Keep the original bank slip, because IChemC collects it at enrolment.
BrightNook Tips Before You Apply
- Read the recognition wording carefully. The 1986 government decision treats the GIC as equal to a science degree for employment, which is not the same as calling it a university degree for every purpose. Check what your target employer or university needs.
- Ask about fees before you commit. The programme page does not list them, so get the full four-year cost in writing from IChemC.
- Look at the scholarships. IChemC publishes enrolment, sports and financial-support scholarship documents on the same page.
- Choose your campus early. Rajagiriya and Malabe are some distance apart, which matters for four years of lab work.
- Waiting for A/L results? Ask IChemC whether you can apply with results pending. The page does not say.
