What the Course Covers
According to the official notice, the diploma prepares teachers to identify and support children who need special education because of visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical disability, intellectual disability, autism and other learning difficulties. It is designed to build the practical skills needed to help these children learn in schools and units.
Who Can Apply (Eligibility)
You must meet all three of these conditions:
- Be under 55 years of age on 30 October 2026.
- Have passed the G.C.E. A/L examination.
- Hold one of the positions listed in the notice. The Tamil-medium notice lists:
- a teacher in a government or government-approved school, or in a pirivena; or
- a lecturer at a National College of Education or a teachers’ college; or
- an officer of the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service or the Sri Lanka Educational Administrative Service; or
- a Sri Lanka Teacher Educator Service officer or a Teacher Advisor; or
- an academic officer of the NIE, or a person serving in a school or institution for children with special educational needs.
Read the notice for your medium. The Sinhala and Tamil notices word the list of eligible services slightly differently (for example, the Sinhala notice names the Sri Lanka Teacher Service). Your eligibility is decided by the official wording, so check the official SE26 advertisement (PDF) before you pay.
How to Apply Online (Step by Step)
- Read the advertisement for SE26 on the NIE New Enrollments page.
- Sign up on exams.nie.lk if you don’t already have an account. The system gives you a User ID – print or save it with your password.
- Log in and complete your profile: personal details and photo, service records (mark your current full-time job) and qualifications. Upload proof images for your certificates and service records.
- On the New Enrollments page, press the green My Application button next to Diploma in Special Education (SE26).
- Check your details and submit. The system then shows the amount payable and a Payment Reference Number. Print this page.
- Pay the Rs. 200 application fee using that reference number – either at People’s Bank (Billing Account 066) or online with Visa/Mastercard using the Pay Now button.
- After 5–10 minutes, open My Application again to confirm the payment has been updated.
- Print your application with the reference number and keep it. Send the original by post only if NIE asks you to.

- Your NIC and a clear photo for your profile
- G.C.E. A/L certificate (proof of passing)
- Appointment letter or service record showing your current post (teacher, lecturer, principal, SLEAS, teacher educator/advisor, NIE or special-education institution)
- Any other qualifications you want to add to your profile
- A bank card for online payment, or the printed reference number if paying at People’s Bank

- Finish your profile before pressing My Application. NIE’s instructions ask you to add the qualifications listed in the advertisement and to upload proof. A complete profile avoids an application that looks incomplete.
- Use the right payment method. NIE says CDM deposits, online fund transfers, SWIFT transfers and other banks or accounts are not accepted. Use People’s Bank Billing Account 066 or the Pay Now card option.
- One reference number, one payment. Each Payment Reference Number is valid for that payment only. Don’t reuse an old number from another course.
- Check your age early. If you turn 55 on or before 30 October 2026, you are not eligible this year.
- Payment not showing? People’s Bank usually updates within 1–5 minutes. If it still shows unpaid, call NIE on 0117 601 776 / 0117 601 777 for manual verification.
