How to Choose Your A/L Stream After O/L Results: A Practical Guide for Students and Parents

Once G.C.E. Ordinary Level results are out, the next big decision arrives quickly: which A/L (Advanced Level) stream should I choose? This choice shapes the university courses and careers that will be open to you, so it deserves careful thought – not just following friends or family pressure. This guide walks you through the options and the questions that lead to a good decision.

The five main A/L streams

1. Physical Science (Maths stream)

Usually Combined Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, or Combined Mathematics, Physics and ICT. Leads to Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Science, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Surveying and related degrees. Best for students who enjoy mathematics and problem-solving and are ready for a heavy workload.

2. Biological Science

Usually Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Agriculture in place of Physics). Leads to Medicine, Dental Surgery, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Nursing, Pharmacy, Biological Science and allied health degrees. Best for students with a genuine interest in living systems and strong memory and study discipline.

3. Commerce

Typically Accounting, Business Studies and Economics. Leads to Management, Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Business Information Systems and professional qualifications such as CA, CIMA and CMA. Suits students who like numbers in a practical, real-world setting.

4. Arts

A wide choice of subjects – languages, Geography, History, Political Science, Economics, Media, aesthetic subjects and more. Leads to Law, Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Languages, Media, Mass Communication and many public-service careers. Suits students with strong reading, writing and analytical skills.

5. Technology

Engineering Technology or Bio-systems Technology, together with Science for Technology and one other subject. Leads to Technology degrees at state universities and many technical and vocational pathways. Suits students who like hands-on, applied learning.

Five questions to ask yourself

  1. What subjects did I enjoy and do well in at O/L? Your Mathematics and Science grades are a strong signal for the science streams.
  2. What kind of work do I see myself doing? Think of daily tasks, not only job titles.
  3. Which university courses interest me, and what streams do they accept? Check the UGC Student Handbook – it lists the required A/L subjects for every course.
  4. Am I choosing this for myself? Parents’ advice matters, but two years of study is much harder in a stream you do not enjoy.
  5. What is my backup plan? Every stream has pathways beyond state universities – private and external degrees, professional courses, NVQ and SLIATE diplomas.

A/L stream eligibility: what you need from your O/L results

Schools admit students to A/L streams based on O/L results and the criteria in the Ministry of Education circular for that year. Science streams generally need good passes (often credits) in Mathematics and Science, and the Commerce stream often looks at Mathematics and Commerce-related subjects. Requirements and school-level cut-offs can change, so check the latest circular and ask your school before deciding.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a stream only because friends are choosing it.
  • Assuming Arts or Commerce are “easy”. Every stream is competitive at university entrance; students do best where their strengths lie.
  • Ignoring the subject combination. Within a stream, the three subjects you choose decide which university courses you can apply for.
  • Deciding only by career salary. Interest and ability usually lead to better results – and better careers – than chasing a title.
  • Not asking for help. Talk to teachers, the school career guidance unit and older students already in that stream.

Tips for parents

Sit down with your child and look at their O/L results together, subject by subject. Ask what they enjoyed, not only what they scored. Help them look at two or three university courses in the UGC handbook and the subjects each requires. Supporting a well-informed choice is more valuable than pushing towards one profession.

What if I change my mind?

Changing streams early in Grade 12 is sometimes possible, depending on school policy, but it becomes harder as the syllabus moves on. If you feel you chose the wrong stream, speak to your class teacher as early as possible.
