The German Tech Moratuwa admission process is the main route into full-time apprentice training at the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI), a government institute under the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education. Selected apprentices train for 3 to 4 years in trades such as automobile, millwright, mechatronics and welding. This guide uses CGTTI’s latest full gazette notice (National Apprenticeship Scheme 2025) so you know what to prepare before the next call.
Check the timing: CGTTI calls applications once a year. Its website says the 2026 intake entrance examination has concluded, so the next call has not been announced. Dates, age cut-off and fees below are from the 2025 notice and may change. Watch germantec.lk for the next notice.

All courses are taught in Sinhala, and the Automobile course is also offered in Tamil. Theory lectures are also delivered in English.
Who Can Apply
According to the 2025 gazette notice, you must:
- Be 16 to 22 years old on the stated cut-off date (18 August 2025 in the last call).
- Have passed six subjects at the G.C.E. O/L in one sitting, including Sinhala or Tamil and Mathematics (or English and Mathematics for the English-medium route).
- Not be bonded to NAITA for 3 years or more.
There is also a special-skills route: candidates placed in the top three at a provincial competition, or awarded a certificate of merit or higher at a national Sri Lanka Inventors Commission competition in electrical, electronic or mechanical fields, may sit the exam. They must still meet the O/L requirement, with no more than two attempts.
Do not rely on old forum posts. Age, O/L rules and fees are set in each year’s gazette. Read the current notice on germantec.lk before you pay the fee, because fees are not refundable.
How Selection Works
- Written entrance exam in Sinhala or Tamil: two papers covering Mathematics, General Knowledge, Intelligence Test, Technical Knowledge, English and Technical Drawing. Centres in the 2025 call were Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Badulla, Anuradhapura and Vavuniya.
- Aptitude test and interview: top scorers are called. Final selection is 40% aptitude test and 60% interview, and extra-curricular activities are considered.
- Medical examination: candidates who fail it are discontinued.
- Bond: selected candidates sign a bond for full-time training (3, 3┬╜ or 4 years depending on the trade) and an agreement with NAITA.
How to Apply (2025 Process)
- Apply only through the online system at fta.germantec.lk. The form must be completed in English.
- Pay the examination fee of Rs. 1,000 online. Other payment methods are not accepted.
- After submitting, download the printable PDF of your application.
- Post the printed application by registered post with photocopies of your birth certificate and O/L certificate (and the Inventors Commission certificate if you use the special-skills route). Write “Recruitment of Apprentice тАУ 2025” in the top left corner of the envelope; use the year of the current call.
- Admission cards are sent to qualified candidates. If yours has not arrived, call CGTTI on 011 2605625 or 011 2605535 within 3 days.

- Prepare early. The entrance paper mixes Maths, General Knowledge, IQ, technical knowledge, English and technical drawing, so start practising before the call.
- Keep certificates ready. You need your birth certificate and O/L certificate in hand to post with the printed form.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long are the full-time courses?
Between 3 and 4 years, depending on the trade (for example Welder is 3 years and Automobile Technician is 4 years).
What is the age limit?
16 to 22 years on the cut-off date stated in the gazette. In the 2025 call it was 18 August 2025.
How much is the application fee?
The 2025 notice set an examination fee of Rs. 1,000, payable online only and not refundable.
Can I apply with O/L results only?
Yes. The standard route needs six O/L passes in one sitting including Mathematics and Sinhala/Tamil (or English), and no A/L is required.
When is the next intake?
