IBSL Banking Diplomas (DBF and HDBF): Entry Rules, Subjects and How to Register

The Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) is the professional body for banking qualifications in Sri Lanka, and its main route today is the Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBF) followed by the Higher Diploma in Banking and Finance (HDBF). This guide explains who can enter, the subjects in each diploma, how exams and intakes work, and how to register, using IBSL’s own pages checked on 21 October 2026.

Old names, new syllabus: many websites still describe the IABF and DABF. IBSL says these belong to the old curriculum, which it said would continue until September 2025. The new DBF and HDBF syllabus started in March 2024. If you are starting now, look at the DBF and HDBF.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Awarding body: Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka, No. 80 A, Elvitigala Mawatha, Colombo 08.
  • Main programmes: Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBF), then Higher Diploma in Banking and Finance (HDBF).
  • Structure: two semesters each, with compulsory subjects and one optional subject per semester. The DBF subjects listed add up to 30 credits.
  • DBF intakes in 2026: 25 April 2026 and 17 October 2026.
  • Exams: two cycles a year, usually in March and September. IBSL says these dates can change.
  • Languages: Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Who Can Enter the DBF

  3. A professional qualification from a recognised professional institute in Sri Lanka or abroad.
  4. A part qualification at a level equivalent to SLQF Level 2 or NVQ Level 4, subject to IBSL approval.
  5. Mature entry: working in banking or finance, over 18, with at least eight years of experience and an employer’s recommendation letter, subject to IBSL approval.
  6. Any other qualification the Institute approves.

Certified copies can be attested by a JP, an Attorney-at-Law, a Grama Niladhari, a bank manager or a school principal.

  3. Log in, complete the Student Membership application and pay online.
  4. After approval you receive your IBSL Student Registration Number by email, then a confirmation letter and Student Identity Card by registered post.

Exams, Late Entry and Results

  • Apply for exams online through My IBSL, or with the downloadable form, with proof of payment, so it reaches the Director of Examinations by the deadline.
  • Late applications are accepted for up to 14 calendar days after the closing date, with a 10% surcharge on the exam fees.
  • You can change subject, language or centre, or withdraw, within 21 calendar days of the closing date. Withdrawal carries a 25% administrative fee.
  • Admission cards are issued about two weeks before the exam. If yours has not arrived 7 days before, download it from the IBSL website.
  • Results are released within twelve weeks of the last exam date and published on the IBSL website only.

What IBSL’s Pages Do Not State

The pages we read do not give a clear total fee for the DBF or HDBF, the exact exam dates or application deadlines for the next cycle, the pass marks, the SLQF level of the DBF, or the entry rules for the HDBF. IBSL has separate New Enrolment Fees and Examination Fees pages. Check those, or call IBSL on 011 2425777, before you pay.
