Sri Lanka Law College Entrance Exam: Eligibility, Papers and Fees

Sri Lanka Law College in Colombo trains future Attorneys-at-Law, and you cannot enter it without first passing the General Entrance Examination, which the Law College runs with the Department of Examinations. This guide sets out who can apply, the four exam papers and pass marks, the fees, and the application steps, using the Law College’s own entrance notice for the 2027 intake, so you know what to prepare before the next call.

Check the status first: the 2027 intake notice opened applications on 30 March 2026 and closed them on 30 April 2026 at 9.00 p.m., with the entrance examination planned for August 2026 in Colombo. Those applications are closed. When we checked the Law College home page on 18 October 2026 it showed no notice about results or the next intake, and we found no dates for a 2028 intake. Watch the Notices page on sllc.ac.lk and doenets.lk.

Who Can Apply?

  • Citizenship: you must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • Age: you must be 17 when you submit the application.
  • A/L: two credit passes and an ordinary pass obtained at one sitting, in the Sri Lanka G.C.E. A/L or the UK G.C.E. A/L.
  • O/L: a credit pass in English and a credit pass in Sinhala or Tamil, from the G.C.E. O/L, the National Certificate of General Education or a recognised equivalent.
  • Other qualifications: the Incorporated Council of Legal Education publishes any alternative qualifications. If you rely on one, call 070-6759892 and get the Law College’s permission before you apply.
  • Special needs: say so in the application and send medical certificates to the Examinations Department with a printed copy of the application.

The registration guideline for the 2026 batch adds that the three A/L subjects exclude General English and General Knowledge. The 2027 notice we read does not repeat that wording, so confirm it in the current notice. If you are still choosing subjects, see our A/L subjects guide.

The Exam: Four Papers

PaperDurationPass mark
1. General Knowledge1 hour40
2. General Intelligence1 hour40
3. Proficiency in English1½ hours40
4. Proficiency in Sinhala or Tamil1½ hours40
  • Scoring below 40 in any one or more papers makes you ineligible.
  • For merit selection, only the General Knowledge and General Intelligence marks are counted.
  • You may answer General Knowledge and General Intelligence in Sinhala, Tamil or English. The language you choose on the application cannot be changed.
  • Bring a National Identity Card, valid passport or valid Sri Lankan driving licence. Your face and ears must stay uncovered at the hall entrance and during the exam.
  • Admission cards are issued online only, after the Law College approves your application. Receiving a card does not confirm that you are eligible.

Tip: merit is decided on only two of the four papers, yet failing the English or the Sinhala or Tamil paper still rules you out. Practise all four, not just General Knowledge.

Fees

  • Examination fee: Rs. 1,200, paid online by credit or debit card, Bank of Ceylon online banking or Flex App, or at any Bank of Ceylon branch. Short or excess payments lead to rejection.
  • Law College fee: Rs. 12,000, paid into the Incorporated Council of Legal Education account named in the notice, in your own name. You then email the receipt, showing your name with initials, NIC number and telephone number, to entrance@sllc.ac.lk. The online application is forwarded only after that email.
  • Neither fee is refunded or transferred.

After selection, the registration guideline for the 2026 batch listed a preliminary-year total of Rs. 67,500 (admission Rs. 25,000, lecture Rs. 25,000, library Rs. 5,000, utility Rs. 10,000, identity card Rs. 2,000, union Rs. 500), payable as Rs. 40,000 and then Rs. 27,500 within three months of registration. These are the 2026 figures, so check the current guideline.

How to Apply

  1. Read the Law College notice and the Examinations Department instructions for the intake.
  2. Pay the Law College fee in your own name and email the receipt to entrance@sllc.ac.lk.
  3. Open doenets.lk, go to Our Services, then Online Applications – Recruitment/EB Exams, and find the Law College entrance examination.
  4. Fill in the form in English, from a desktop computer, well before the deadline. You may send only one application.
  5. Pay the Rs. 1,200 examination fee online and keep the confirmation SMS or email.
  6. Print your application. Changes made after printing are not valid.
  7. Wait for the web notice and download your admission card online.

Applications are rejected if they are incomplete or incorrect, if you apply more than once, if the Law College fee receipt is not emailed, or if you do not meet the entry rules. False information can cancel your candidature at any stage. Never share your NIC number in public comments.

What the Law College Does Not State

  • The notice does not give a syllabus or subject content for the papers.
  • It does not name exam centres, only that you sit in Colombo.
  • We found no published date for the results, or for the next intake.
  • The notice says the Sinhala version prevails if the three language versions differ.
