The University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC, also written UoVT) in Ratmalana is the state university that offers Bachelor of Technology degrees to NVQ Level 5 and 6 diploma holders, and to some school leavers through the A/L Z-score route. This guide sets out who can apply, how selection works, the fees and the application steps, using the university’s own admission, payment and selection pages, so you know what to prepare before the next call.
Check the status first: when we opened the application portal on 18 October 2026 it said “Applications are closed” for Intake 2025/26. We found no dates for the 2026/27 intake. The admission page links a Prospectus 2026/2027. Watch portal.uovt.ac.lk and uovt.ac.lk for the next call.

Who Can Apply?
The admission page says UNIVOTEC generally accepts NVQ Level 5 or Level 6, or equivalent qualifications, and tells you to review the entry requirements for the programme you choose. The Web and Creative Media page, for example, lists NVQ Level 5, NVQ Level 6 and the A/L stream as standard routes, and notes a minimum of an NVQ Level 5 ICT diploma. Other programmes may list different qualifications, so open your programme’s own page before you apply. If you are not sure what NVQ levels mean, read our NVQ levels guide.
How Selection Works
The selection criteria document on the UNIVOTEC site is labelled Intake 2025/2026 and states no other date, so treat the figures as last year’s method and check the current prospectus. It says:
- The final score (Final CSS) is 40% of the Stream-Weighted A/L Rank (S-NAR) plus 60% of the Aptitude Rank (ATR).
- S-NAR is worked out as 50 plus 15 times the Z-score, multiplied by a Stream Difficulty Multiplier. The multipliers are 1.10 for Physical Science (Maths), 1.08 for Biological Science, 1.05 for Engineering Technology and 1.00 for Commerce, Arts and others.
- Raw aptitude test marks are converted to a standard scale of 100. The document does not say how.
- If Z-score applicants tie on the final score, the one with the higher S-NAR is selected.
- For NVQ applicants who have no Z-score, selection is based on the aptitude rank. If marks are still tied, “verifiable experience after obtaining NVQ 4/5 qualification” is used.
To learn what a Z-score is, see our A/L Z-score guide.
Fees
The UNIVOTEC payment page lists these amounts in Sri Lankan rupees:
| Fee | Weekday | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 2,000 |
| Refundable deposit (returned at the end of the programme) | Rs. 20,000 | Rs. 20,000 |
| 1st semester course fee | Not listed | Rs. 25,000 |
| Total at registration | Rs. 22,000 | Rs. 47,000 |
| Registration renewal, 2nd and 3rd years | Rs. 2,000 each year | Rs. 2,000 each year |
| Semester course fees, semesters 2 to 6 | Not listed | Rs. 25,000 each |
| Additional fees during the course | Rs. 4,000 | Rs. 129,000 |
All fees are due within the first two weeks of each semester or academic year. Payments go through GovPay, the Government of Sri Lanka’s online gateway, and you should keep the receipt. The page also mentions instalment options (Options A and B) in an annexure but does not give their details.
How to Apply
- Check that you meet the entry requirements for your chosen programme.
- Submit an application on the online portal (portal.uovt.ac.lk) within the published period.
- Upload your documents and pay the non-refundable application processing fee.
- Check your status for the aptitude test and subject-specific tests.
- Attend an interview if you are invited.
- Complete document verification and fee payment on the date given, to enrol.
BrightNook tips: read the programme page, not just the faculty page, before choosing, because entry routes differ. Keep your NVQ certificates and A/L results ready as clear scans, since the portal asks for uploads. Pay only through the official links the university gives you, and save every receipt. The payment page lists a weekend course fee of Rs. 25,000 per semester, so work out the six-semester cost if you plan to study part-time.
What the University Does Not State
- Dates for the 2026/27 intake, including the opening and closing dates.
- The application processing fee amount. The payment page mentions the fee but not the figure.
- Whether tuition is free. No UNIVOTEC page we read says so, and the pages list course fees for weekend study, so do not assume it.
- Entry qualifications for each programme and the full list of degree programmes. Check each programme page or the prospectus.
- The weights of the aptitude test, subject tests and interview, and how raw aptitude marks are converted.
- Financial support, scholarships or bursaries. The payment page does not cover them.
- The instalment options (Options A and B).
